Every school organisation formulates a vision on education. Teachers (tutors and instructors) are expected to align themselves with this vision. The curriculum is constructed around this vision.
In addition to a vision, the school has a mission. A mission is the ultimate objective that the school envisages and the reason that the school educates students. In a mission, a school organisation must look ahead and provide the students with a package of knowledge, skills and attitudes that will be useful to them in the future.
It is the teacher’s responsibility to translate this vision into the lesson practice. The way in which the lesson is presented in a school and your degree of freedom, will differ per school. In some schools teachers have a lot of individual freedom of movement, while in other schools the contents and teaching methods are prescribed. The extent to which you are able to handle the 21st century skills during your lessons is affected by this freedom of movement.
21st century skills are competences that students require to be able to successfully participate in the society of the future. This for instance concerns skills like critical thinking, creative thinking, problem solving, etcetera. In order to properly prepare students for the 21st century society, it is important that these skills are taught in education.
This module forms a helping hand to everyone involved in education. Wherever it reads student, this could also refer to pupil, course participant or participant.
